Size affects more than appearance: a compact cushion can sit neatly against an armchair, while a larger square can give a deep sofa a fuller, more inviting look. An 18-inch or 20-inch square is a familiar starting point for many seating arrangements, but the furniture’s proportions matter more than any single measurement. A pillow should not disappear behind a tall sofa arm or occupy so much space that there is little room left to sit. Neither look is universally better; the right proportions depend on the furniture and the amount of usable space around it.

Inside, polyester fiber generally creates a lightweight, springy feel, while feather or feather-and-down blends tend to settle into a more relaxed shape and may need regular fluffing. Insert sizing should follow the cover maker’s recommendations; a slightly larger insert can give some covers fuller corners, but overfilling can strain seams or make the cushion too firm. A removable cover with a concealed zipper allows the outer fabric to be refreshed separately when its care instructions permit. Removable does not automatically mean machine washable, and decorative trims may require different handling from the main fabric. Checking the care label before cleaning helps preserve color, texture, and shape. For cushions used frequently, occasional rotation and fluffing can redistribute filling and help prevent one side from becoming noticeably flatter than the other.

The most convincing square pillow arrangements usually connect to something already in the room rather than introducing several unrelated ideas. A small accent color from a rug, artwork, or curtain can reappear in a cushion, giving the space a sense of continuity. Pattern mixing is often easier when the designs share a color but differ in scale: a broad stripe, a smaller geometric motif, and a solid textured fabric can sit together without competing for attention. On a patterned sofa, quieter cushions allow the upholstery to remain the focal point. On a plain sofa, a pair of expressive square accents can supply most of the visual detail. Contrasting textures are useful when a room needs interest but not more pattern; smooth upholstery, a woven throw, and a softly textured cushion each contribute something different.
