Full sun is required for fruit production. Prune the tree as needed in late winter or early spring to encourage a neat look and it makes it easy to harvest the plums off the tree. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring every year. Water the plum tree thoroughly the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. After it is established in the landscape, it will need 1 inch of water per week. Mulch the root zone to retain moisture during dry spells.
