Mazzei 'Philip' Toscana IGT Super Tuscan Red 2019, 750 ml 3 Pack 94 Points CA ONLY

For 26 generations, the Mazzei family has been producing benchmark Italian wines from their historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate in Tuscany and more recently in the Maremma, Sicily and the Veneto. The passion, commitment and expertise that goes into these expressive wines is a reflection of the Mazzei’s spirit of innovation and respect for each property’s unique terroir.

This wine is dedicated to Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), an illustrious ancestor of the family, political thinker, American Patriot and pioneer, together with Thomas Jefferson, of viticulture in Virginia. Made with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon selected from our estates, Philip is the quintessence of Tuscany. "The great doctrine ‘All men are created equal’, incorporated into the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of Philip Mazzei, an Italian-born patriot, and close friend of Jefferson’s." (JFK, "A Nation of Immigrants")

Philip Mazzei was born on December 25, 1730 in Poggio a Caiano near Florence, Italy. Mazzei was a man of wide interests and talents, and his influence was felt both in America and across Europe where he traveled extensively. He was highly respected and regarded among prominent men from all walks of life. Throughout Virginia and Europe philosophers, merchants, businessmen, politicians, diplomats, presidents and noblemen all sought Mazzei’s friendship and advice. By the time of his death on March 19, 1816 in Pisa, Italy, Philip Mazzei had been a physician, merchant, horticulturist, viticulturist, pamphleteer, political activist, linguist, diplomatic agent, historian, and royal adviser.

Scores and Tasting Notes
Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 94 Points: “The Mazzei 2019 Philip is an all-Tuscan expression of Cabernet Sauvignon (with a tiny part Cabernet Franc) that delivers rich texture, ripeness and ripe fruit…  The 2019 vintage nails that proverbial sweet spot between softness, structure, fruit and spice. This is a plush, fruit-forward and balanced Tuscan red.”
