The 2018 Vintage will go down in history as one of the top Bordeaux vintages of the decade, if not all time. A warm and wet winter gave the vineyards some trouble in the beginning of the year. However, a particularly hot, dry summer followed by moderate amounts of rain in early fall allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Chateau Montrose, located in the St. Estephe appellation of Bordeaux, is a 2nd growth with a history of producing some of the top wines in Bordeaux. Currently owned by the Bouygues family, the estate is producing wines under the watchful eye of Jean Bernard Delmas, who was previously wine director for 1st growth Chateau Haut Brion. The wines from Chateau Montrose have been performing exceptionally well in the modern era, with this 2018 vintage receiving some amazing reviews. One of the few 100pt wines from the 2018 vintage, this is an amazing opportunity to pick up a wine that can age for years and will truly showcase what the estate has to offer. This unit contains 2 bottles (750ml) of the 2018 Chateau Montrose. 100 Points Jeb Dunnuck: A full-bodied powerhouse as well as a perfect wine, the 2018 Château Montrose is a final blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. Boasting a deep purple hue as well as awesome levels of crème de cassis and smoky blackberry fruits and notes of tobacco, lead pencil, scorched earth, and chocolate, it's deep, opulent, and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with no shortage of mid-palate depth, tannins, or length. It reminds me a little of a fresher version of the 2003, although there's more Cabernet Sauvignon in 2018 as well as less Merlot. It has that classic Montrose minerality and backward, mineral-laced style, yet I suspect this will be drinkable in just 5-6 years and should evolve into a modern-day legend from this terroir98 Points Decanter98 Points Wine Advocate98 Points James SucklingWinemaker Notes: Chateau Montrose 2018 delivers a profound nose of baked plums, blackberry preserves and raisin cake with touches of dark chocolate, licorice, Chinese five spice and sandalwood.
