Technically, it means buying the wine before it is bottled and released to the market. Each year in Bordeaux (~April), the whole city springs to life as wine enthusiasts from around the world gather to taste the vintage harvested the year prior, straight from the barrel (like a sneak-preview for wines!).  At that time, even before bottling, the wine can be secured at a lower price to be delivered after ~2y when it has finished aging.Estate HistoryChâteau d'Yquem is a prestigious wine estate in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux, France. It is renowned for producing the finest and most expensive sweet white wine in the world. The history of the château dates back to the 16th century, when it was owned by the Sauvage family. In 1593, it was acquired by Jacques de Lur-Saluces, whose descendants would manage it for over four centuries. Yquem was granted the status of Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wines, the only Sauternes to receive this distinction. The estate covers 113 hectares of vineyards, planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The grapes are affected by a fungus called Botrytis cinerea, or ‘noble rot’, which shrivels them and concentrates their sugars and flavors. The harvest is done by hand, with several passes through the vineyard to select only the most affected grapes. The wine is aged for up to four years in new oak barrels before bottling. This premier cru estate is known for its exceptional quality, longevity and complexity. It has aromas and flavors of honey, apricot, peach, citrus, vanilla, caramel and spice. It can be enjoyed young or aged for decades, even centuries. A rare and exquisite wine that reflects its unique terroir and history!2020 VintageThe weather and the vineyard conditions in Sauternes can affect the quality and quantity of the wine, which depends on the presence of a fungus called botrytis that shrivels the grapes and concentrates their sugars. In 2020, Château d'Yquem produced less wine than in 2019, 2021, and 2022, because of fungal diseases in spring and rain in autumn that reduced the harvest time to only five days.
