Homeowners have plenty of ideas and information at their fingertips. However, there are still a number of home renovation undertakings best left to the experts — especially those involving gas, plumbing and electric wiring.

1. Installing hardwood flooring

This is especially difficult if the layout of the room is complex. Not only does the process demand a significant amount of time, skill and research, but the cost of an error is likely to surpass that of expert installation.

2. Clearing gutter clutter

Clearing the gutter by hand can be hazardous for homeowners; many experts carry tools to tackle the task from the ground. Also on the no-go list? Tree trimming and roof repair.
Pro-Tip: To curb long-term cleaning costs, invest in a gutter system that has been designed to remain free of clogs caused by leaves and debris.

3. New countertops and cabinetry

Don't underestimate the margin for error in installation. Even a minor measurement mistake could result in an uneven assembly or necessitate all new (costly) materials.
Pro-Tip: Remember to factor the cost of buying new tools into the pros and cons of attempting a project yourself. Installing crown molding, for example, requires expensive equipment.

4. Refinishing furniture
