Frequently Asked Questions

Station Operation

Q: Who can buy fuel at a Costco Fuel Station?

A: The fuel station is open to Costco members only. There is an exception: Prepaid Costco Shop Card customers do not need to be Costco members.

Q: Why does fuel station traffic flow only one way?

A: One-way traffic makes it easier to get in and out of our stations quickly. Our extra-long hoses allow fueling from either side of the vehicle, so you can choose any lane.

Q: How do I pay for my fuel?

A: The fuel station is self-serve with pay-at-the-pump technology. We accept Visa®, most PIN debit cards and prepaid Costco Shop Cards. (Exceptions: Oregon and New Jersey are full-service per law).

Q: How does the pump know the customer is a member?

A: When a customer inserts a membership card, the system reads the card and confirms the membership is active.

Fuel Quality

Q: Costco fuel pumps read “Kirkland Signature Fuel.” What does that mean?

A: Whether it be items sold inside the warehouse or the fuel outside, Costco only places its Kirkland Signature brand on the highest quality products available to its members. Our commitment is to provide the best quality fuel for the best value to our members.

Q: How does Costco define “high-quality” fuel?

A: Two ways…our unique fuel formula and exceptional station maintenance. Costco has conducted extensive engine tests at nationally recognized laboratories, and we’ve introduced additive technologies in our fuels to address both modern day and older engines. Our fuels have been certified to meet the TOP TIER™ performance standards.

In addition, Costco fuel is filtered so that contaminants such as sediment and water do not find their way into our members' vehicles. Our stations are well-maintained by capable attendants, so you may be confident that the fuel going into your vehicle is clean.

Q: What is the actual difference between Regular and Premium fuel?

A: Octane levels are the difference between regular and premium gasoline sold at Costco. Regular fuel is typically 87 octane and Premium fuel is typically 91 octane. The higher the octane, the smoother your engine will run. Costco advises that you use the octane rating specified in your owner's manual.

Safety

Q: Why does Costco have fuel station attendants?

A: Our safety-certified fuel station attendants help customers in a variety of ways, including aiding anyone requiring physical assistance to fuel their vehicle. They can respond immediately to any safety or environmental issue and are charged with enforcing the national fire code, including prohibitions against smoking, leaving the engine running, or filling portable containers not certified for such use.
