Released annually, the Duclot Bordeaux Collection Set is a selection of 9 prestigious wines from the Bordeaux region of France expertly curated by the wine brokers at “Duclot”. The set showcases the diversity and excellence of the given vintage, featuring wines from different appellations, terroirs and styles. Each year can be different, but the set often includes iconic labels such as Lafite Rothschild, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Cheval Blanc, Yquem, and even Petrus. The set is presented in a specially designed case which changes each vintage, along with a booklet that provides information and tasting notes for each wine. The collection has become highly sought after among collectors, and is a rare opportunity to taste and compare some of the finest wines in the world.
The 2019 vintage set contains 1 bottle of each of the following:
(1x) Château Lafite-Rothschild 2019 750ml
100 Wine Advocate, 100 James Suckling
First among the 1855 Bordeaux Classified Growths, Château Lafite-Rothschild is the master of its gravelly land. The bearer of a long winegrowing tradition that began in 1620, it has asserted itself over the centuries as a veritable standard bearer of the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Indeed, from the Cardinal of Richelieu to the then President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, the great personalities of the world have fallen under the spell of these great wines with their unique soul and unparalleled refinement.
“One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.” - William Kelly, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
(1x) Château Mouton-Rothschild 2019 750ml
100 The Wine Independent
After a milder-than-average winter and a cool spring, June was marked by heavy precipitation. It was in July that summer made its great appearance with high temperatures and some precipitation, which prevented the vines from suffering too much water stress. At Chateau Mouton Rothschild, the 2019 harvest began on September 5 with white grape varieties. The harvest continued on September 18 with the red grape varieties and ended on October 5. The 2019 harvest was very generous, both in terms of quantity and quality. From the outset, 2019 promised to be a fantastic vintage, yielding grapes that were rich in color, with high degrees of alcohol and a very fine tannic structure.
“The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little broody to start off, soon unfurling to offer notes of creme de cassis, baked plums, and boysenberry preserves, followed by hints of crushed rocks, tree bark, and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich, concentrated, and intense, with grainy tannins and a long, lively, mineral-sparked finish. This is still so youthful - moving at a glacial pace - so, give it a good 7-9 years more in cellar and drink it over the following 40-years+.” - Lisa Perrotti Brown (formerly at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate), The Wine Independent
(1x) Château La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge 2019 750ml
100 Jeb Dunnuck
A neighbor of the illustrious Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion has served for centuries as one of the most iconic references of Bordeaux. Founded in the 16th century by the Lestonnac family, the property was then managed by the Lazarist priests. Now belonging to the Clarence Dillon estates and Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion continues to shine as one the greatest chateaux in the world. Combining freshness and significant heat, 2019 will be remembered for its major climatic contrasts. The summer brought several heatwaves which did not, however, lead to water stress in the vines or blockage of the ripening process. Rainy days in September made it possible for the grapes to become perfectly ripe in time for the harvest. The harvest began on August 29 for the whites and on September 10 for the reds.
“The 2019 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is Merlot-dominated, checking in as 53% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It's a more opulent wine compared to Haut-Brion, and the Merlot is front and center here, with ripe, sexy black cherry and redcurrant fruits as well as licorice, scorched earth, cedar pencil, and graphite aromas and flavors. Rich, exuberant, and straight up sexy on the palate, it's full-bodied, has a deep, layered mid-palate, building tannins, and a heavenly finish. Just a prodigious, powerful, off-the-charts expression of this terroir, it actually reminds me slightly of the 2005 (or 1998?) with its mix of sexiness and opulence. This is one of the few 2019s that will make your eyes roll back in your head. It will need 10-15 years of cellaring, but it’s a sensational wine on every level and will have 40+ years of prime drinking.” - Jeb Dunnuck
(1x) Château Margaux 2019 750ml
100 Wine Advocate, 100 Jeb Dunnuck
The Chateau Margaux vineyard owes its unique character to its rare terroir, situated upon an outcropping of gravel. The vineyard of the property gives pride of place to the area's flagship red grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, which is complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The clay-limestone soils of the estate produce legendary wines with a distinguished and sensual allure, so representative of the Margaux appellation. 2019 will be remembered as the hottest year ever recorded in France. After a mild winter and a warm spring, marked by significant precipitation, the summer of 2019 brought scorching temperatures. At Chateau Margaux, the harvest began on September 18 and ended on October 10. The precipation from September 22 to 29 helped slow down the ripening of the grapes, which maintained a very good level of acidity and average alcohol levels.
“Is the 2019 Château Margaux the wine of the vintage? A strong case in its favor could certainly be made. Soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, pencil shavings and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a penetrating, mouthwateringly saline finish of almost interminable duration. Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own.” - William Kelly, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
(1x) Château Haut-Brion 2019 750ml
100 The Wine Independent, 100 James Suckling
Château Haut-Brion’s vineyard is located in the commune of Pessac, just a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city center. It belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the north of the Graves wine-growing region. Château Haut-Brion is the only wine to be both First Growth from the 1855 classification and Classified Growth of the Graves. The winter of 2018-2019 was mild and dry. Cool temperatures in spring slowed down vine growth. Flowering took place in ideal conditions, without coulure (shot berries) nor millerandage (abnormal fruit set). Storm Miguel swept across the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region on the 7th of June, although our grapes were fortunately spared. Heavy, regular rainfall was conducive to vegetative growth, leading the vines to develop an impressive leaf canopy. The rain came to a sudden halt on the 22nd of June, and a series of successive heatwaves ensued. July was the third hottest in history after 2006 and 2013, with temperatures reaching a record-breaking 42°C on the 23rd. Fortunately, rain fell on the 26th, followed by cool nights in August, propitious to the synthesis of anthocyanins. Véraison (colour change) was slow but uninterrupted. September was marked by fine, dry and sunny conditions, interspersed by welcome rainfall. Thanks to this ideal spell of weather, all the grape varieties were harvested at peak ripeness and at a leisurely pace.
“Composed of 48.7% Merlot, 43.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8.1% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Haut-Brion is deep garnet-purple in color. It waltzes out with flamboyant scents of wilted roses, star anise, mossy tree bark, and kirsch, leading to a core of blackcurrant pastille and stewed black plums. The full-bodied palate has a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the densely packed, muscular black fruit, finishing incredibly long and with a spicy lift. Give it 5-6 more years in bottle to really hit its stride and drink it over the next 40-years+.” - Lisa Perrotti Brown (formerly at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate), The Wine Independent
(1x) Château Cheval Blanc 2019 750ml
100 Wine Advocate, 100 James Suckling, 100 Vinous
Château Cheval Blanc boasts a unique and rare terroir and a special position on the Saint-Émilion plateau. While the appellation of Saint-Emilion is known for its limestone formations, Château Cheval Blanc is situated on Quaternary alluvium soils of Isle, a non-limestone formation with a varied texture, combining gravel and clay soils in roughly equal proportions. This unique soils is quite similar to those of the greatest estates of Pomerol. The 2019 vintage had few disease pressures. While the rainy days in June caused fear of mildew, none ever appeared in the vineyard of the Château Cheval Blanc. The ideal climatic conditions during the summer made it possible to start the harvest peacefully with the fruit in perfect health condition. Ultimately, this 2019 vintage allowed the wine to accurately express the identity of the three types of terroir of Château Cheval Blanc. The richness and power of the Merlot was perfectly controlled through a very precise harvest, while the Cabernet ripened more slowly, allowing it to develop very fine tannins.
“One of the unequivocally great wines of the vintage is the 2019 Cheval Blanc, a stunning young Saint-Émilion that wafts from the glass with aromas of wild berries and plums mingled with notions of lilac, pipe tobacco, violets, raw cocoa, licorice, crushed mint and burning embers. Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's deep and intense, with beautifully rich, powdery tannins and vibrant flavors. Concluding with a long, saline finish, this rivals the 2016 as the finest Cheval Blanc of the decade, and in many respects it might be thought of as the latter vintage's sun-kissed cousin. Bravo to Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team!” - William Kelly, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
(1x) Château Ausone 2019 750ml
100 James Suckling
Chateau Ausone is one of the most prestigious and historic wine estates in Bordeaux, France. It is located on the right bank of the Dordogne river, in the commune of Saint-Emilion. The estate produces a red wine that is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, the highest rank in the Saint-Emilion appellation. Chateau Ausone is renowned for its elegance, complexity and longevity, as well as its limited production and high price.
“Like a bouquet of fresh flowers on the nose, as well as blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. Sandalwood as well. Full-bodied with incredibly polished tannins that have the texture of the finest velvet. The palate is very fine, oriented with fabulously pure fruit and minerally and stone undertones at the finish. It’s so classical in nature. Essence of Ausone. 60% cabernet franc and 40% merlot. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2027.” - James Suckling
(1x) Château Pétrus 2019 750ml
100 Jeb Dunnuck
Chateau Petrus is one of the most prestigious and expensive wines in the world. It is produced in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, from mainly Merlot grapes. The wine is known for its rich, complex and elegant aromas and flavors, as well as its long aging potential. Chateau Petrus is a rare and sought-after wine that represents the excellence of French winemaking.
“The 2019 Château Pétrus is a behemoth, and I can't imagine a better marriage of sexy, opulent fruit with purity, precision, and length. Always all Merlot from a single parcel of clay soils, it takes time to unwind in the glass (I followed this bottle for multiple days) and offers a powerful, primordial style in its black cherries, mulberries, smoked tobacco, damp earth, and chocolate, as well as a beautiful floral component that emerges with air. Dense, concentrated, and incredibly rich on the palate, it has a multi-dimensional mouthfeel and sweet yet substantial tannins. Despite plenty of glycerin and opulence on the palate, which certainly makes it fun to taste today, it has a very straight, classic feel that will demand bottle age. It probably needs to be forgotten for 8-10 years and will deliver the goods over the following 50 years or more.” - Jeb Dunnuck
(1x) Château d’Yquem 2019 750ml
97 Wine Spectator, 97 Decanter
Chateau d'Yquem enjoys an extraordinary location, nestled in the heart of the hills of the Sauternes appellation, and comprises around a hundred hectares of vineyards that are planted on a tapestry of gravel and sandy soils. The hot and dry weather conditions in February and March preceded a very rainy and cool period at the beginning of the vegetative cycle. Although the milder weather at the beginning of June favored a swift flowering phase, a heatwave set in at the end of the month, lasting almost until August 15th. These high temperatures ensured a rapid crop development, thus compensating for the slight delay that was recorded at the beginning of the cycle. On July 26th, a rare and intense rainy episode replenished the soil’s water reserves. The warm, dry weather conditions leading up to the harvest were ideal in refining the grape’s perfect ripeness level. The harvest of this Chateau d'Yquem 2019 began on October 10th and was carried out under favorable conditions for five days. The harvest led to an exceptional vintage that combines a fruity, fresh and concentrated expression.
“A special wine right from the start, this glistens with pure papaya, mango, white peach and mirabelle plum, joined by elderflower honey, toasted macadamia nut and orange blossom notes. Ends with a remarkably long finish. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2050. 4,583 cases made.” - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator
