Step into the world of bold elegance and enduring legacy with the Cos d’Estournel Vertical Collection (2000–2017)—an extraordinary 18-bottle set featuring one 750ml bottle from each vintage across 18 consecutive years. This rare vertical offers an immersive journey through nearly two decades of winemaking excellence at Cos d’Estournel, showcasing the estate’s mastery of structure, depth, and age-worthy complexity across a dynamic range of growing seasons.
Situated at the southern edge of Saint-Estèphe and overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Cos d’Estournel is revered not only for its powerful, sensuous wines but also for its distinctive architecture and boundary-pushing vision. As a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification, Cos d’Estournel has long stood apart—embracing both tradition and innovation to craft Cabernet Sauvignon–led blends marked by exotic spice, opulence, and unmistakable character.
This vertical collection captures the estate’s stylistic evolution—from the classicism of the early 2000s to the precision and polish of the 2010s—providing a collector-caliber window into the soul of Saint-Estèphe and one of Bordeaux’s most compelling estates.
Among this remarkable 18-year span, a handful of vintages stand out as icons—benchmark expressions of Cos d’Estournel’s grandeur and finesse. Highlighted below are these exceptional years, each accompanied by a brief vintage overview.
Château Cos d’Estournel 2003 750ml
A bold and exotic wine born of an exceptionally hot vintage, the 2003 Cos d’Estournel is lush, opulent, and immensely seductive. In a year where many struggled with overripeness and imbalance, Cos d’Estournel excelled—crafting a wine of remarkable poise, richness, and allure. It reveals a hedonistic bouquet of ripe blackberry, fig, mocha, and incense. The palate is concentrated and velvety, offering tremendous depth and a finish that lingers with both power and grace.
Critic Tasting Notes: “The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d’Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more. Kudos to winemaker Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier.” – Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate (98 pts)
Château Cos d’Estournel 2005 750ml
The 2005 vintage stands as a benchmark for Cos d’Estournel, reflecting the perfection of the growing season. This wine exudes power and poise, with a bouquet of ripe blackberries, graphite, truffle, and subtle oak. On the palate, it is dense yet incredibly refined, showing purity of fruit, layered complexity, and a finish of striking length and finesse.
Critic Tasting Notes: “The purity of fruit to this is fascinating with plums, currants and other dark fruits. Then there is another layer of spices and chocolate. So much cassis. Full and very layered with chewy polished tannins and a long, long finish. Just starting to open. Changes all the time. Still needs a year or two but gorgeous to drink already.” – James Suckling (99 pts)
Château Cos d’Estournel 2009 750ml
Celebrated as one of the finest vintages in the estate's history, the 2009 Cos d'Estournel is opulent and seductive. It presents an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, mocha, and exotic spices. The palate is voluptuous, with rich layers of dark fruit, velvety tannins, and a finish that lingers endlessly.
Critic Tasting Notes: “Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cos d'Estournel features a myriad of wonderfully intense notes, including blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blueberry compote with hints of rose hip tea, sautéed herbs, underbrush, pencil shavings and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and opulently fruited in the mouth, it has beautifully plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and very spicy.” – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (100 pts)
Château Cos d’Estournel 2010 750ml
The 2010 vintage is a paragon of structure and balance, embodying the estate's commitment to excellence. It offers a complex nose of dark berries, graphite, and hints of tobacco. The palate is robust and concentrated, with firm tannins and a precise acidity that ensures a long aging potential.
Critic’s Tasting Notes: “Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Cos d'Estournel unfurls slowly, measuredly, releasing delicate notes of dried mulberries, stewed plums and blackcurrant pastilles before giving way to notions of potpourri, black cherry compote and chocolate box plus touches of dried sage, tobacco and new leather. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid foundation of very firm, grainy tannins and very lively acidity supporting the remarkable intensity of tightly wound fruit layers, finishing very long and fragrant. Give it another 4-5 years in bottle and this will be stunning!” – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (99+ pts)
Château Cos d’Estournel 2016 750ml
Hailed as a modern classic, the 2016 vintage showcases the estate's ability to craft wines of precision and grace. It reveals aromas of black cherry, violets, and subtle spice. The palate is beautifully balanced, with refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a purity of fruit that leads to a persistent finish.
Critic’s Tasting Notes: “The 2016 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc aged in 65% new and 35% two-year-old French oak for 15 months. Bottled in July 2018, it is deep garnet-purple colored and starts off a little closed and reticent, opening out slowly and seductively to reveal beautiful lilacs, rose hip tea, crushed stones and camphor nuances over a core of crème de cassis, kirsch, wild blueberries and mocha plus wafts of incense and wood smoke. The palate is simply electric, charged with an energy and depth of flavors that seem to defy the elegance and ethereal nature of its medium-bodied weight, featuring super ripe, densely pixelated tannins that firmly frame the myriad of fruit and floral sparks, finishing with epic length. Just. Magic.” – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (100 pts)
