Sweet summertime
Can we be halfway through 2022 already? It seems like just a week ago I was scraping ice from my car window, and now here we are on the cusp of summer. For many of us, this is the time of year when we dust off our hiking boots, pump up the bike tires, dig out our swimsuits and launch into outdoor activities.
That is not the case for our cover subject, ultramarathon man Dean Karnazes, who doesn't seem to have stopped running and breaking record after record since he began a few decades back.
Yet, despite his almost superhuman feats, Karnazes, a Costco member, has a lot of wisdom to impart to those of us who strive merely to stay physically fit and mentally motivated. His advice serves as a great midyear reminder that getting healthy can start anytime.
Summer is also when certain farm-fresh fruits become readily available, and this issue offers different ways to enjoy them. "Mango mania" explains how to prepare Ataulfo mangoes for snacks, salads or salsa, or purée them for sauces, drinks and more, while "Berry sweet" points out the versatility of succulent strawberries.
Last, but certainly not least, warmer weather means fewer layers of clothing, and the opportunity to display jewelry. One of June's birthstones is the pearl, and Costco goes to great lengths to provide the highest quality and best value for several varieties of these gorgeous gems. You can read about them in this month's Buying Smart, "Jewels of the sea."
