Costco Connection What would you most like readers to know about The House in the Pines?
Ana Reyes This is a story where things aren't what they appear, and danger lurks where you might not expect. It's about buried secrets, lost memories and a house with a mystery at its heart.
CC What is it about how memory works (or doesn't) that intrigues you?
AR I'm interested in the way memory shapes us. … But I'm also intrigued by what we can't remember … and the way these blank spots make us who we are too. Maya is haunted by something that happened the night she visited a man named Frank at the house he'd built in the forest. She can't quite remember what happened—the memory lurks just out of reach. Yet the trauma of it remains. Maya's self-destructive behavior at the beginning of the book is an attempt to cope, but the real story starts when she realizes that uncovering the truth of what happened is the only way for her to heal. This power of memories to both hurt and heal is a major theme of the novel.
