The Tuscany region is one of the most famous and prolific wine regions in Italy, and is home to some of Europe’s top wine producers. While the region is well known for its native, Sangiovese based wines from Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, wines that include non-native varietals (Like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and others) have been garnering global recognition.
These wines that are produced in the Tuscany region, and include some non-native grape varietals, have been dubbed “Super Tuscans”. Some of the top Italian wines such as Sassicaia, Masseto, and Solaia, fall under this category and fetch some of the highest prices in the region.
This curated pack of Super Tuscans lets you experience some of the oldest and most prestigious producers. The Mazzei Family, who produces the ‘Siepi’ label in this pack, has been producing wine at Castello di Fonterutoli since the 1400’s. The ‘Le Difese’ label comes from Tenuta San Guido, which also produces Sassicaia, one of Italy’s top Super Tuscans. Last but not least, Caiarossa’s namesake label has been brought into the spotlight in the recent years thanks to it’s acquisition and modernization by Eric Jelgersma, who acquired the estate in 2004. He brought with him the winemaking expertise from Chateau Giscours in Bordeaux (one of only fourteen, 3rd growths in Bordeaux).
2018 Mazzei ‘Siepi’: 97 Pts James Suckling – 97 Pts Vinous – 96 Pts Wine Advocate. A blend of Sangiovese and Merlot
James Suckling: “Extremely perfumed and crystal-clear with violets, plums, raspberries, walnuts and black olives. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are extremely polished and refined. The length is long and very precise. Chocolate and hazelnuts. This is the 25th anniversary of this fine merlot and sangiovese. Hard not to drink now, but better after 2022.”
2015 Caiarossa: 96 Pts James Suckling – 94 Pts Wine Advocate. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Syrah.
James Suckling: “The nose immediately shows a fabulous contrast between riper mulberries and blackberry crumble and freshly ground herbs, citrus and incense. The palate shows much the same polish, carrying bright blue-fruit flavors across a bedrock of muscular tannins and driven acidity. This finishes long and very grainy yet succulent. A blend of merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, sangiovese, petit verdot and alicante. Drink in 2022."
2019 Tenuta San Guido ‘Le Difese’: 92Pts Wine Enthusiast. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.
Wine Enthusiast: Made with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Sangiovese, this has enticing aromas of cassis, black tea, violet and wild herbs. Savory and elegantly structured, the medium-bodied palate shows ripe blackberry, star anise and a hint of coffee bean framed in lithe, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced.”
