Nicaragua Finca La Carolina Single Estate Pacamara 2012 Coffee of Excellence Award Winner 2 lbs.
Cup of Excellence is a strict competition that selects the very best coffee produced in that country for that particular year . These winning coffees are chosen by a select group of national and international cuppers and are cupped at least five different times during the competition process. The final winning Micro Lots are awarded the prestigious Cup of Excellence® and sold to the highest bidder during an internet auction.
Mayorga Coffee is privileged to have the winning bid on the top lot of coffee to enter the United States. The award winning lot was produced by Andres Figueroa Lopes and comes from the Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua. In total we received 2,645.55 pounds of this very special coffee. After cupping the coffee ourselves we fell in love with its medium body with hints of melon and its tropical fruit finish. Not only is the taste special, but it is also a special variety of bean. The bean itself is of the Maragogype variety. A Maragogype, also known as an elephant bean, is distinguished by its extremely large size. In fact when we used our coffee test screens, 98.9% of the beans measured wouldn’t even fit through the largest screen we have (the #18 screen is 18/64 of an inch). Maragogype’s also tend to have less acidity than most bean varieties. This quality helps create a smooth finish to the cup. Other contributors to its exceptional rating include the elevation that it was grown at and the small size of the lot. The farm itself sits 4,324 feet above sea level. Like all of Mayorga’s coffees, the high elevation contributes to its fantastic quality. Also because it is a Micro Lot, the crop was easier to tend to. In comparison to the average coffee lot, Andres Figueroa Lopes farm is relatively small (0.04 square miles). This allows the farmer to spend more time caring for individual cherries, making sure they all are perfectly ripe. This results in a perfectly balanced cup.
