Kirkland Signature™ 2011 Rutherford Meritage - Napa Valley
The 2011 Kirkland Signature Rutherford Meritage is a classic representation of the “Rutherford Dust.”
It was developed in a year that yielded relatively small crops, although what was produced, particularly the Merlot, exhibited fantastic quality and overall flavor. After traditional tank fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften the acidity, the winemakers finished maturation in small, French oak barrels. The result is a luscious wine that bears sweet aromas of cassis, red and black currants, and black cherry, with the distinct flavor of the “Rutherford Dust.”
According to winemaker Marco DiGiulio, “The soft powder, fine dust and perfumed soil of Rutherford is transferred to both grapes and wine. It is truly a driving component behind the 2011 Kirkland Signature Rutherford Meritage.”

Despite being one of the smallest wine appellations inside the Napa Valley, the Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA) is also one of Napa Valley’s most highly sought terriors.
Its soil boasts volcanic deposits, promoting phenomenal drainage and deeply rooted vines, which allow Bordeaux-style wines to flourish. The volcanic gravel, loam and sand deposits also lend the fruit an earthy finish, noted as “Rutherford Dust,” a famous and desirable quality in all Rutherford wines.
