“2012 San Francisco Giants World Series Celebration” – Original Oil on Canvas by Opie Otterstad

“To celebrate my tenth year on the World Series celebration paintings I was fortunate to paint a team I am close to.  Having completed a painting for them just two years previous, I still knew most of the members on the team that won it all in 2010. The painting features the players from the World Series roster plus a beard.  Everyone on the team was excited to see how they looked in the new painting when I unveiled it in the clubhouse in Old Town Scottsdale last March.  Since they won both championships on the road, I decided that their hometown needed a reference in this painting...so "ghosted" faintly in the upper right hand corner of the painting is a night time image of the Bridge and skyline from San Francisco, one of my favorite cities in America. Having spent quite a bit of time there over the last three years, this painting is special because it captures the spirit of the city as well as the great game of baseball.”

Opie Otterstad (BIO): At the age of 3, Otterstad was often found drawing pictures during his father’s sermons. His passion for drawing at such a young age would grow into a passion for creating Fine Art in the years to come. In college, art was not the only thing that interested Otterstad.  After earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from St. Olaf College, Opie’s pursuit to understanding the mind resulted in a Master’s Degree in Psychology.  This newly found interest led him to one of the leading sports psychologists in the world, Dr. Fran Pirozzolo. While working a summer job at Baylor College of Medicine, Opie would work on his drawings during his breaks.  Dr. Pirozzolo noticed the drawings and asked if Opie did more than just draw. The conversation quickly turned into Pirozzolo commissioning Opie to paint Evander Holyfield, Greg Norman, and Berhard Langer. From that point forward, Opie’s art career would be focused on sports.

The continuing wisdom of his professors and mentors coupled with a new confidence launched Opie into a lifelong commitment to bridge the gap between sport and fine art.  A tireless work ethic directed at his passions has created a world renowned artist, considered prolific by any standards. With over 2000 works of art to his credit since 1993, friends and peers tease Opie about his commitment to his craft. Opie believes it is his consistency that allows his growth and extended vision in his work.

Cross country road trips visiting his subjects in their hometown are not uncommon. The lives and histories of his subjects are very important to Opie and are always clearly and deeply portrayed in his work.  He feels that a better understanding of his patron produces a better work of art from within himself. He takes the necessary time in order to create a work of art that not only speaks to an individual's sports life, but their entire life.

Opie has chosen to live the life of an artist from an era long passed, taking the time to get to know his patrons as friends. His commissioned works become statements about his own life, each representing a relationship. Each and every work tells a unique story about his subject - some are very obvious, others much more vague.  They are personal expressions about the people he knows and calls friends.
