"Vision de Paris" by Marc Chagall
"Vision de Paris" by Marc Chagall
Let Marc Chagall speak for himself. Below are two quotes by Chagall that explain his love of Paris and the inspiration it gave him throughout his career.
"…No academy could have given me all I discovered by getting my teeth into the exhibitions, the shop windows, and the museums of Paris. Beginning with the market – where, for lack of money, I bought only a piece of a long cucumber – the workman in his blue overall, the most ardent followers of Cubism, everything showed a definite feeling for proportion, clarity, an accurate sense of form, of a more painterly kind of painting, even in the canvases of second-rate artists."
"My works are dear to me, each in its own way, I shall have to answer for them on the Day off Judgment. God alone knows whether I shall ever see them again."
Original color lithograph by Chagall. Created in the Mourlot Studios for Verve no. 27 & 28 in Paris. 1952. Unsigned.

Whatever story that can be told about Chagall, his bravery is what I always find most admirable about him. His bravery allowed him to stand on his own. He refused to be labeled the Father of Surrealism. He never "belonged" to any movement or school of art. Chagall completed the drawings for the bible, illustrated the Fables of La Fontaine and relying on his talent and faith and courage, painted the ceiling of the Paris Opera House. He stood on his own, he committed himself to projects that other great artists would never even attempt. He believed there was no separation between the fantastical world of his flying objects of fancy and what others would call the real world. Because he was brave and loyal to his vision, he was able to realize his potential to be one of the greatest Master painters and print makers of the 20th Century. Today his art is included in major collections and museums across the world.
