Marc Chagall (1887-1985) Many say the magic of modern Russian/Fench artist Marc Chagall is in the images of childhood memories that float through many of his works.  Untainted by acquaintance with modern experiments, Chagall's work is sincere and direct in its revelation of the artist's character.

Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel.  He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opera.  Chagall was commissioned to illustrate the Old Testament.  This assignment was a risk for him, as he had finally become well known as a leading contemporary painter influenced by Cubism and Surrealism; but would now end his modernist themes and delve into an ancient past.  Between 1931 and 1934 he worked compulsively on The Bible.  He once told an acquaintance: "I did not see The Bible, I dreamed it.  Ever since early childhood, I have been captivated by The Bible.  It has always seemed to me and still seems today the greatest source of poetry of all time."
