"Frontispiece" by Georges Braque

This piece is fascinating.  With all the talk of Braque and his birds- the soul in flight as metaphor- Braque delivers to us a flightless bird.  The subject is in fact the space in the painting.  It was said by Braque that he wished to paint space and that there was no symbolism that lived in his work.  If you remove the subject and the metaphor and the symbolism, what's left is the energy of the painting in its purest form that stands alone as quite profound.

Color lithograph by Braque created for Verve 27 & 28.  Paris, France 1952.

Georges Braque (1882-1963) Trained to be a house painter and decorator like his father and grandfather, Braque emerged as one of the major 20th-century French painters and sculptors who, along with Pablo Picasso, developed the art style known as Cubism.  His earliest works were impressionistic, but after seeing the work exhibited by the artistic group known as the "Fauves" (Beasts) in 1905, Braque adopted a Fauvist style.  The Fauves, a group that included Henri Matisse and André Derain among others, used brilliant colors to represent emotional response. Picasso and Braque were the Cubist movement’s main innovators.  They began working on the development of Cubism in 1908.  Both artists produced paintings of monochromatic color and complex patterns of faceted form, now called Analytic Cubism. Braque was severely wounded in the war, and when he resumed his artistic career in 1917 he moved away from the harsher abstraction of cubism.  Working alone, he developed a more personal style, characterized by brilliant color and textured surfaces.  He painted many still life subjects during this time.  Braque, along with Matisse, is credited for introducing Pablo Picasso to Fernand Mourlot, and most of the lithographs and book illustrations he himself created in the 1940's and '50's were produced at the Mourlot Studios. Braque's work is in most major museums throughout the world.
