Marc Chagall (1887-1985) As a young man from a small village in Russia, Chagall overcame his fear of big city life and moved to Paris.  It was there that he realized his vision. Paris would be one of the true loves of his life.

Whatever story that can be told about Chagall, his bravery is what I always find most admirable about him.  His bravery allowed him to stand on his own.  He refused to be labeled the Father of Surrealism. He never "belonged" to any movement or school of art. Chagall completed the drawings for the bible, illustrated the Fables of La Fontaine and relying on his talent and faith and courage, painted the ceiling of the Paris Opera House. He stood on his own, he committed himself to projects that other great artists would never even attempt.  He believed there was no separation between the fantastical world of his flying objects of fancy and what others would call the real world. Because he was brave and loyal to his vision, he was able to realize his potential to be one of the greatest Master painters and print makers of the 20th Century. Today his art is included in major collections and museums across the world.
